Derek Rue’s career reflects remarkable versatility and dedication. Originally from Los Angeles, Derek began his artistic journey in France, studying French and music at the University of Lyon. While there, he immersed himself in vocal music, jazz piano, and guitar, laying the groundwork for a career that spans operatic, musical theater, and concert stages.
His operatic debut as Tamino in Mozart’s The Magic Flute at Pasadena City College earned him the prestigious Anne Marie Ketchum Award and opened the door to further studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, where he trained under Christoph Stehl. His time at the Mozarteum refined his artistry, preparing him for a career on some of Europe’s most renowned stages.
Derek’s professional engagements began in Germany at the Mittelsächsisches Theater in Freiberg, where he performed roles such as Tebaldo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Wenzel in Die verkaufte Braut, and Camille de Rossillon in Die lustige Witwe. His repertoire also included comedic and dramatic roles, showcasing his ability to adapt to a wide range of operatic styles.
Since joining Theater Trier in 2019, Derek has expanded his repertoire to include some of opera’s most challenging and diverse roles. Highlights include Alfred in Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, Jack Twist in Wuorinen’s Brokeback Mountain, Fenton in Verdi’s Falstaff, and Lucio in Wagner’s Das Liebesverbot. He has also tackled roles in contemporary works and crossover productions, such as Ari in The Comedian Harmonists.
Beyond opera, Derek is an accomplished concert performer and has sung in works like Verdi’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. His work in musical theater further demonstrates his versatility, with roles like Tony Candolino in Masterclass and Barnaby Tucker in Hello, Dolly!
